Jeremiah is instructed to hear the words of this “covenant,” “beriyth” in Hebrew, and speak to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, telling them, “Cursed be the man that obeyeth not the words of this covenant, Which I commanded your fathers in the day that I brought them forth out of the land of Egypt,” urging them to obey His voice, and do these words, and they shall be His people, and He will be their God.
Jeremiah describes how the Lord said to him, a conspiracy is found among the men of Judah, and among the inhabitants of Jerusalem, they have turned back to the iniquities of their forefathers, who refused to hear His words, following other gods to serve them, both Israel and Judah having broken His covenant, describing how the Lord will bring evil upon them, which they shall not be able to escape, and though they cry to Him, He will not hearken to them.
Jeremiah describes discovering God’s revelation of a plot against his own life, the men of Anathoth seeking his life, saying, prophesy not in the name of the Lord, that he not die by their hand, Jeremiah responding, “I was like a lamb or an ox that is brought to the slaughter; and I knew not that they had devised devices against me,” pleading for God to reveal their plans to him, since he had committed his cause to Him, closing with God’s response promising to punish the men of Anathoth, their young men dying by the sword, their sons and daughters dying by famine, no remnant of them remaining, since the Lord will bring evil upon the men of Anathoth, even the year of their visitation.
Jeremiah’s discovery of a conspiracy against his own life, even from his hometown of Anathoth, reveals the genuine, personal cost of faithful prophetic ministry, opposition sometimes coming from the very community that should have offered the most natural support. His comparison of himself to an unsuspecting lamb led to slaughter captures genuine vulnerability alongside continued faithful obedience despite real, mortal danger.
